Henderson, Alexander

Henderson, Alexander
(c. 1583–1646)
   Polemicist.
Henderson was born in Fife, Scotland, and was educated at St Andrews University. As an Episcopalian, he taught at the university and served a nearby parish. By 1618, however, he had been converted to Presbyterianism. He was one of the authors of the National Covenant of 1638, which bound the estimated three hundred thousand subscribers to defend the freedom of the Scottish Church and the Presbyterian religion. It was produced in response to King Charles i’s attempt to impose episcopacy. Henderson was elected Moderator of the General Assembly and, when Charles visited Scotland in 1641, he was compelled to accept him as his chaplain. In 1643 Henderson drew up the Solemn League and Covenant which was accepted by the British Parliament and the 1644 Directory for Public Worship which was designed to replace the Book of Common Prayer. This was imposed on the English Church in 1645.
